Green Tourism
At Widefirth Cottages we are committed to providing an excellent quality
of service for our guests whilst also minimising the environmental impact
of our business. A symbol of our commitment is our membership of
the Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS). Under this scheme we
have achieved a Gold Award by reducing our energy and water consumption,
actively pursuing recycling and purchasing local produce.
Each cottage minimises energy use by being well insulated and centrally
heated, using “A” energy rated appliances and the use of
low energy light bulbs.
We reduce, recycle and re-use in order to ensure our footprint is minimal
and encourage our guests to follow the same philosophy. Waste bins
for recycling glass, paper and metal are provided.
Environmentally friendly cleaning products which do not harm the environment are provided
for use during your stay.
Provisions of the welcome packs are locally sourced.
Farming Environment
Widefirth Cottages are situated on the Riff farm. Since late
2006, the farm has been placed on the Rural Stewardship Scheme for the
management of the land and adoption of environmentally friendly practices. At
Riff farm the land is managed to increase the diversity of grassland
plant species and farmland birds. The fields have been sited and
linked to maximise their benefit. An archaeological Bronze Age
cist is also maintained.
We have a small number of cattle
which are kept happy and healthy with minimal use of medication.
A farm explanatory pack introduces visitors to what we are doing and
raises awareness of how farms contribute to the countryside.
